Simply put, I believe people should be allowed to enjoy any fictional preferences without being attacked or harassed. However, I do believe that fiction can affect reality, just not in the way that "antis" usually explain it.
We know fiction has affected reality throughout history, in both good and bad ways. Stories are powerful; they can change people's mindsets, normalize ideas, influence society. I believe there are problematic examples of fiction, such as those that encourage discrimination and are written irresponsibly or specifically to spark hatred.
It's important to recognize that there are many factors that determine whether a work of fiction is harmful or not. There's historical context, the intent in the piece created, the audience, etc.
A fanfiction for a taboo ship on AO3, for example, that has the correct warnings and tags that you will only likely find by actively looking for it. Fanfiction that are 'problematic' are in a safe space where none of the characters are living, breathing people with their own unique thoughts and feelings. People write them for a number of reasons whether it is to overcome trauma or explore dark topics in a controlled space where no one gets hurt.
For example, just because someone writes a gore fic detailing the character as an organized killer does not mean that the writer is also planning to have a string of serial killings of the same manner. That is very different from a show aired on national TV portraying racism or homophobia as funny or acceptable, the latter being much more problematic for me
